Free tools for UML
I have a new project that demands UML diagrams and I started googling around. I was looking for free tools or community editions of some commercial tools. As I have seen in the last years, many companies created some community editions of their products. It was a very smart move because if you can't afford to pay the money and you still need such a tool then you will look for the cracked "edition". If there is a community edition then you will use it
admitting it is fair that some useful functionalities exist only in the commercial edition. Fortunately usually the removed from the community edition functionalities are not so many or we don't need them as much as big companies do.
Talking about community editions I remember something I heard about a civil engineer's software. One day after each new release the previous release can be found cracked. I am definitely sure that the people who crack it are the people who develop it.
Anyway for UML diagrams the most interesting applicationas I found were the StartUML , BoUML and Visual Paradigm Community Edition . Only StartUML does not work on Linux. Visual Paradigm is the best of course but the procedure of requesting keys is very annoying. So I tried the other two free applications. I couldn't use BoUML, I tried to open a new project and there were no toolboxes. I didn't try it on Windows so I don't know how good it is. It is supposed to be fast and code generator so I suggest you give it a try.
StarUML is really an open source software star. It is an amazing tool. Funny thing for me is the fact that StarUML is an excellent UML tool although it has three years to be updated! There are some addon modules that have been developed in these three years and it is very easy to add them. The sad thing is that some people want to take the project over their hands but the Sourceforge admins do not help . Many e-mails have been sent to the original developers but there is no answer. Some parts of the GPL license can be interpreted in two ways so people are afraid to take the source and change it. I don't understand what they are talking about because it happens in some projects like CentOS and RedHat etc. At least that's what I remember about.
I hope somebody takes over the StarUML project and continue to develop it because we must have good FOSS alternatives. It is a matter of honor!
